There is something visceral about a vintage starting lineup sheet. The smell of the grandstands, the heat of a Florida July, and the sound of unrestricted big-block V8s seem to radiate off the page. Today, we’re diving into a treasures find from the vault: the original starting lineup for the 17th Annual Daytona Firecracker 400, held on July 4, 1975.
Looking at this list, you aren't just looking at names; you’re looking at the DNA of stock car racing.

The Front Row: Speed and Southern Grit
Sitting on the pole was Donnie Allison in the #88 DiGard Chevrolet, clocking a blistering 186.737 mph. Beside him sat the legendary Buddy Baker. In 1975, these speeds at Daytona were a testament to the "Aero Wars" evolution, even as the sport moved away from the winged wonders of the early 70s toward the sleeker, down-to-earth body styles of the mid-decade.
A "Who’s Who" of Legends
Scan down the rows and the names represent the Mount Rushmore of NASCAR:
Row 2: "The Silver Fox" David Pearson alongside a young, hungry Darrell Waltrip.
Row 4: Benny Parsons and the legendary Bobby Allison.
Row 7: The King himself, Richard Petty, starting mid-pack in his iconic STP Dodge.
The Independent Spirit
What makes this artifact truly special is the depth of the field. Row 10 features Richard Childress. Years before he became the powerhouse owner for Dale Earnhardt, Childress was a "man in the arena," grinding it out as an independent driver/owner. You’ll also spot names like J.D. McDuffie (Row 15) and Elmo Langley (Row 18)—men who formed the backbone of the sport, racing on shoestring budgets and pure passion.
The Machines
The "Type Car" column is a nostalgic trip for automotive enthusiasts. While Chevrolet and Ford dominate, the 1975 grid still boasted variety. You see Dodge (Petty and Marcis), Mercury (Pearson’s Wood Brothers entry), and even a Plymouth driven by Buddy Arrington in Row 19. Notably, Bobby Allison’s entry is listed as a "Matador"—the unique AMC entry that briefly shook up the status quo.

Why It Matters
This piece of paper was likely held by a fan sitting in the Daytona grandstands 49 years ago, shielding their eyes from the sun while checking off the cars as they thundered past at nearly 190 mph.
The race itself would go on to be a classic, with Richard Petty taking the checkered flag—his first-ever Firecracker 400 win—further cementing 1975 as a banner year for the Petty Enterprise team.
